A self-paced lecture series

The Practical Insights were a lecture series conducted for Bharati Vidyapeeth College of Architecture, Mumbai in November 2018 and January 2019. The intent of the series was to give practical guidance to students specific to their Architectural design. This series has been opened to all students of architecture after due permissions from the college and speakers. The series begins with a lesson on designing specific to context and tricks to maneuver the site for our function. This is followed by a lecture on sustainable and eco-friendly design. The next modules are on specializations like Homes and Housing, Community and Cultural Centers, Resorts, Hospital and Healthcare, Offices and Public Sanitation

Richa Bose and Mayank Mishra

Richa Bose

Architect Richa Bose (Angirish) studied architecture at the M.S. University, Baroda; during which she worked extensively in the earthquake affected Latur region of Maharashtra as a trainee with the Ahmedabad Study Action Group (with Ar. Rajendra and Rupal Desai). Soon after her graduation she worked with Development Altenatives (with Ar. Geeta Vaidyanathan), designing and constructing using appropriate and local technologies, where amongst other things she was actively involved in forming mason groups into Guilds, conducting trainings and workshops for skill up-gradation of masons and exposure to cyclone resistant design for Orissa. She has worked as an architect briefly at the Anangpur Building Centre, Faridabad with Mr. Anil Laul using Cube-on vertex structures, Geodesic domes etc. From 2000 to 2002, the Architects and organizations Ar. Richa Bose has worked with include – Sumit Ghosh and Associates (New Delhi), Prof. Ar. K.T. Ravindran (New Delhi) and Caltech India (Kolkata – with Mr. Biswadeep Sen). Richa, over the years, has also been associated with INTACH and BIOME, Kolkata (Environmental solution extension of Architect Chitra Vishwanath, Bangalore). Ar. Richa Bose is a visiting faculty at the Jadavpur University, Kolkata since 2011.

Mayank Mishra

Mayank Mishra B-Arch has been associated with SHiFt since last 9 years. A graduate from Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mayank naturally evolved into the role of Studio Head with SHiFt. Being able to simultaneously lead the varied process at SHiFt, Mayank leads the creative, research and analytical thinking tasks, while maintaining his role as a designer. Green Building, Eco Resorts, a real estate IT Park, various institutional buildings passive solar architecture, water management systems, energy cycle, lifecycle analysis these are examples of Mayank's impressive list of projects and skills. He has additionally dealt with brand consultan, graphic design, product design, furniture design and website design.

Swapnil Valvatkar and Ayan Sen

Swapnil Valvatkar

Having graduated from Goa in 2001, Swapnil Valvatka formed the Collage studio in 2009 after training in Chandavarkar and Thacker Architects Pvt. Ltd and later working with eminent architect, Sanjay Mohe in Bangalore on projects of varying scales and typologies for over 8 years. Since the formation of the firm, the architects have successfully designed and completed several projects for which they have received recognition and accolades over the years. Collage is a young bunch of enthusiastic people always open to fresh and new ideas, experimenting new concepts with a common vision to carve out inspiring spaces which strongly emphasize a symbiotic relationship with the natural environment. The design approach is primarily space driven, wherein; the form is a derivation of these spaces.

Ayan Sen

Ayan Sen is a graduate of School of Architecture, CEPT, India and has done his Masters in Urban Design from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA. He provides specialized expertise in the areas of master planning for waterfronts and campuses including residential and mixed use projects and professionally been involved in several architectural projects in India that include resorts, institutions, commercial and health care and residential projects. ASAUDP was started in India with the thought of providing collaborative, creative and International professional systems in the growing architectural environs of emerging India. The premise: ‘Locally Sensitive Regional thinking can get integrated with the best of International Practices and Systems’ has been the founding pillar of its young, vibrant team. The philosophies and design ideologies have tried to invoke the regional vernacular and its expression in the modern contemporary idiom and integrate the two in a holistic manner.

Team Design Jatra believes in no style but the local. Before going ahead with any project, an intense documentation of the site context is carried out in order to explore various skills, materials and techniques available for execution. The team holds a strong belief in a design process that is both inclusive and organic. Every structure is the spontaneous outcome that arises from the effective collaboration between the architect and the construction team. Pratik Dhanmer and Shardul Patil from Design Jatra will mentor this course.

Dr Vivek Desai

Dr. Vivek Desai – the founder of HOSMAC India Pvt. Ltd. – is a medical graduate with a post-graduation in hospital management and business management. His major areas of interest are strategic business planning, macro level project co-ordination and incubating new business ideas. He has been special invitee on major industry bodies like Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), and the Indian Merchant Chambers (IMC), among others. He has also worked as an advisor to the World Bank, USAID, Indian Ministry of Health etc.

Naresh Narasimhan

Architect, Urbanist, Activist and Creative, Entrepreneur.

Naresh V Narasimhan heads Venkataramanan Associates, a second generation multi-disciplinary award-winning architecture firm based in Bangalore. Steeped in values of integrity, commitment, professionalism and ethics, VA has held a steady reputation for delivering high-quality projects across various sectors. Naresh, trained as an architect at the Manipal Institute of Technology, India (B Arch 1985) later studied Project Appraisal and Risk Management at Harvard University (1995). Apart from heading the architecture practice at VA, he founded the MOD Institute, the Bangalore Agenda Task Force addressing highly relevant urban issues. His interests range from socioeconomic modelling, knowledge-sharing and communication strategies to cinema, art appreciation and popular culture. A prolific speaker, he is frequently invited to lecture at several events nationally and internationally

Rohan Chavan

Architect

Ar. Rohan Chavan is an Architect, Planner, Designer, Founder and Owner of RC Architects, a multi-disciplinary design practice started in 2015. He is also a visiting Faculty at Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architect, Mumbai. His work engages with projects and issues related to public and community sanitation, urban design, affordable and low-cost housing, single-family houses, space design, and institutions. The unique approach towards living patterns and bold style are the highlights of his design practice. He loves to fuse modern materials in a vernacular pattern creating spaces that are rich in natural light and landscape.
