Supreme Court ruling on the Architects Act

has been met with uproar, confusion and concerns from the Architecture fraternity

The Supreme Court, on March 17, 2020 held that the Architects Act, 1972 does not prohibit individuals, not registered under the Act to undertake the practice of architecture and other cognate activities. However, the Bench comprising of Justices DY Chandrachud and Ajay Rastogi, in its judgment said that using the title "Architect" or other similar terms by an individual has real-world consequences and that there exists a presumption that a person using such a title would have a degree of Architecture and be registered under the Act.

Architect Habeeb Khan is currently the President of the Council of Architecture. He has been involved in teaching since the beginning of his career. He has been taking guest lectures and engaging with design studios in architectural colleges all over the country, apart from juries and examinations. He is currently the Director at Priyadarshini Institute of Architecture and Design Studies (PIADS), Nagpur, and Lokmanya Tilak Institute of Architecture & Design Studies (LTIADS), Mumbai. His Design Teaching revolves around sensitizing students towards their own heritage and roots, context and climate within the framework of being contemporary. Habeeb has actively been working with the Govt. of Maharashtra on few policy framing guidelines. He has also been nominated by the Govt. of Maharashtra, on the Council of Architecture.

Architect I Founder - SMG Design Inc.

Srinivas Murthy G. is the founder and principal architect of his studio practice named SMG Design Inc. Popularly known as SMG, he is a founding member of the World Association of Architectural Organisations (AAO), Chicago, a network of like-minded design organisations dedicated to enhancing public dialogue about architecture and design. He is Founding President of Architecture and Design Foundation (India) - an organisation dedicated to spreading awareness about values of good design and architecture in India. He was awarded the "Award for Excellence 2017" by the Government of Telengana, for a year-long programme of "Architecture for Social Equity - heritage walks for school children". He was conferred the "Fellow of IGBC" award by IGBC in 2019.
