What is this Typology Special Studio about?

Is mass housing about massing the houses or housing the masses? Perhaps a little bit of both, as housing inherently is saddled with apparent dualities of quantitative versus qualitative dimensions i.e. 'shelter' versus 'home'. Housing 'constitutes the smallest tissue of the built fabric and as the single largest number by a building type is responsible for shaping the built-form character and image of the place. Moreover, the dwelling is more than a shelter. It has the highest associational bond with the user and ought to be a perfect fit to individual needs and priorities.

Yatin Pandya

Architect and Author

Yatin Pandya born on 6th July, 1960, is an author, activist, academician, researcher as well as the practising architect, with his firm FOOTPRINTS E.A.R.T.H. (Environment Architecture Research Technology Housing). Graduate of CEPT university, Ahmedabad he has availed Master of Architecture degree from McGill University, Montreal. Yatin has been involved with city planning, urban design, mass housing, architecture, interior design, product design as well as conservation projects. He has written over two hundred articles in National and International Journals. Several books authored by him on architecture, especially "Concepts of space in traditional Indian architecture", and "Elements of space making" have been published internationally. He has also been involved in preparing over 30 video documentaries on Architecture. He has been visiting faculty at National Institute of design and CEPT University and guest lecturer/ critic to various universities in India and abroad. He has served as thesis guide to nearly 200 Graduate, Masters and PhD students. He has lectured in over fifteen countries in over hundred fora. Yatin has won over twenty five National and International awards for architectural design, research as well as dissemination. Environmental sustainability, Socio-cultural appropriateness, Timeless aesthetics and Economic affordability are key principles of his work.

Tentative Schedule

Zero Lecture for all faculty, design chairs and HOD on Understanding housing and design methodologies.

TEAM ACEDGE conducts a digital alignment workshop for faculty and students for 2 hours on any one chosen day.

Week 0, Wednesday (Tentative date): All faculty meet the mentor to discuss the status of their studios and understand their individual briefs to plan and customise the Institution studio.

Week 1, Tuesday:
Theme: Housing types, Open spaces
45 min Student questions for Prof. Yatin Pandya followed by 45 min Faculty discussions with Prof. Pandya on the stage and status of work at their studios.

Week 2, Tuesday:
Theme: Site Planning and Housing Policies
 45 min Student questions for Prof. Yatin Pandya followed by 45 min Faculty discussions with Prof. Pandya on the stage and status of work at their studios.

Week 3, Tuesday: 
Theme: House form and Sustainable practices
 45 min Student questions for Prof Yatin Pandya followed by 45 min Faculty discussions with Prof Pandya on the stage and status of work at their studios.

Week 4, Tuesday:  45 min Student questions for Prof. Yatin Pandya followed by 45 min Faculty discussions with Prof Pandya on the stage and status of work at their studios.

Week 5, Tuesday:  
Theme: Communication and Presentation of design
 45 min Student questions for Prof. Yatin Pandya followed by 45 min Faculty discussions with Prof. Pandya on the stage and status of work at their studios.

Week 6 : Internal student review and across studio faculty exchange for 'Jury- Round One' and 'Jury- Round Two'.

Week 7, Tuesday:  One student from each college present their work, which will be reviewed by Prof. Pandya: 5 min presentation followed by 3 min review, each college.

22nd Sept, Tuesday:   One student from each college present their work, which will be reviewed by Prof. Pandya: 5 min presentation followed by 3 min review, each college (Final presentation and closing remarks).
