More than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Due to the ongoing urbanisation and growth of the world’s population, there will be about 2.5 billion more people added to the urban population by 2050, mainly in Africa and Asia. 

Today, cities and towns face a variety of environmental challenges concerning food production, energy, water, waste management, and pollution, as well as social challenges in regard to jobs, poverty, and human health and wellbeing. The new urban revolution is about “Healthy, Liveable, Sustainable, and Resilient Cities”. The course introduces the ecological approach to urban planning. The legal instruments and scientific methodology or tools available.


This is an ONLINE course where individual learners can enjoy a learn-at-your-pace system. The entire course is divided into Five Modules of total 45-60 mins duration each. Every module is divided into multiple short lectures.

This course can also be taken as part of "Aligning Design with Allied Fields" where experts from fields of Sociology, Environmental Psychology, Economics and Environmental and Urban planning will share insights with learners. Individual learners may join it as a self-paced course and institutions are encouraged to join it as an elective or additional course.

Rohit Pansare is an independent researcher and environmental consultant with over 8 years of experience in the conservation and environment planning field. This includes experience in conducting environmental assessments and habitat risks assessments using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS). He has a Master’s in environmental Planning from CEPT University, Ahmedabad and Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Mumbai University with a specialization in urban and industrial waste management.
