Introduction

The "afterlife" of an architectural thesis or research project in India follows a multi-tiered trajectory. It spans formal regulatory archiving, institutional digital storage, open-source creative portfolios, and, unfortunately, a frequent slide into academic obscurity.Ph.D. pedagogical research in Indian architecture rarely makes its way directly to practical problem-solving in the mainstream design studio. Instead, it suffers from a systemic loop: it is written by academics, evaluated by academics, archived in databases and cited strictly in other academic papers.

Led by Ar. Mahesh Daas, this 120-minute interactive workshop frames higher education spaces, campus infrastructure, and surrounding urban contexts as Living Empirical Research Environments. The workshop equips faculty to turn their academic inquiries into empirical, ground-impact research frameworks.

By collecting hard, measurable data on environmental performance, socio-spatial usage, indoor climate, and material performance, faculty will learn how to build research methodologies that deliver direct, tangible outcomes.

Participants will discover how to convert their academic work into research that directly improves the lives of people, optimises the performance of physical spaces, empowers local communities, and protects the environment, while simultaneously generating top-tier peer-reviewed publications, high-impact PhD dissertations, and successful grant proposals.

What will you learn?

  • From Abstract Spatial Concepts to Systems Thinking: Empower faculty to cultivate Evidence-based Design frameworks; shifting architectural inquiry from subjective/isolated design thinking towards systemic, scaleable, computational, measurable human-ecological outcomes.

  • Position Faculty as Change Agents: Faculty are institutional architects with the power to redesign the learning environment.

  • Guide participants in structuring clear, testable research hypotheses with defined variables and real-world impact metrics.

  • Train researchers to build an Agile Knowledge Loop, ensuring data seamlessly bridges the gap between high-impact peer-reviewed publishing (PhD) and rapid translation into studio teaching models and industry practice.

  • Provide each participant with a structured plan to align their ongoing academic practice and doctoral goals with grant funding and high-impact ground outcomes.

Session Lead

Ar. Mahesh Daas

President, Boston Architectural College, Boston, USA

Dr. Mahesh Daas is an internationally recognized architectural educator, researcher, author, and academic leader with more than thirty years of experience in American higher education. Before becoming President of Boston Architectural College in 2019, he served as Dean of the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas, Irving Distinguished Professor and Chair of Architecture at Ball State University, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Research at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In 2011, he was elevated to ACSA Distinguished Professor, becoming the first educator of Indian origin to receive this distinction, one of the highest honors in North American architectural education. A graduate of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad, Dr. Daas earned his master's degree in urban design from Kansas State University and his doctorate in higher education management, with distinction, from the University of Pennsylvania.

What Will Participants Take Away?

  • An Empirical Hypothesis & Variable Matrix: A validated research framework with explicit parameters (e.g., human behavior metrics, environmental data inputs, or computational constraints) ready for PhD defense or grant submission.

  • A "Studio-Translation" Blueprint: A 1-page design studio brief or elective syllabus outline that demonstrates exactly how the faculty member’s research will be deployed to undergraduate students within the next academic cycle.

  • A Multi-Tiered Dissemination Roadmap: A clear visual timeline showing how a single primary data set will be bifurcated into a UGC-CARE/Scopus-indexed paper and an actionable whitepaper/industry toolkit.
