Course Overview

Exploring Parametrics design

When someone says the words “contemporary architecture,” what comes to your mind? The shattered, undulating forms of futuristic designs are often at the forefront of the one’s imagination.

But how do you execute those designs? What is 3-D printing?

How does one use robotics in construction?

What materials can you explore?

In the due of this course, we aim to explore the different aspects involved with the development, prototyping, development techniques and execution of parametric design.

Course Structure

The structure is designed to equip and enable students with knowledge to execute their own designs

  • Understanding parametrics and design
  • Apply your understanding of Softwares - 3D Max, Rhino, and GH
  • Design and planning for client budget, manufacturing transportion, and assembly
  • Material technology and process
  • Prototyping with techniques like BD/CNC/WA/LAS
  • Techniques of fabrication : Wood, Stone, Concrete
  • Techniques of fabrication : Metal, Polymers and 3D printing.

Instructor

Ar.Krishna Murthy

Instructor

Architect Krishna Murthy is the founder of “FOLDS DESIGN STUDIO” an architectural studio & production house committed to developing futuristic and technologically advanced designs. Inspired-to draw, design and build structures from a very young age through graphics and basic design. His hands on approach and distinctive eye for scale and proportion made him choose Architecture as a subject of interest. Through years of experience and research with different fabric and texture he felt the need to bridge the gap between Design technology and Built.

Folds Design Studio

Sneak peak into parameteric production

FOLDS DESIGN STUDIO is a group of “Architects-Designers-Artists-Craftsmen-Researchers”.

An innovative platform where idea and process un-folds through technology, to achieve futuristic designs. We aim towards connecting the process between the design team and the production house and signifies a more calculated approach to this seemingly random process and allows exploring endless possibilities of any design/material to get to an end product. Use of cutting edge technology details the end product within the same material/context.

This method of design process gives us a control of our overall thinking as a firm.It is an exclusive design studio and passionate in bringing ideas to life, where art and technology are connected together to design and produce.

Collaborations by Folds Design Studio

The installation art-work titled “Jhāḍa” (“Tree” in Marathi) Nuru Karim “Nudes” in collaboration with your mentor for this course, Krishna Murthy  of Folds Design Studio celebrates the growth and prosperity of the state of Maharashtra. The growth and energy of the state is captured through flowing lines, vectors and surfaces that gradually rise from the ground to occupy the space of an all-encompassing canopy symbolizing the state as both “protector” and “mentor”.

The installation has been realized deploying cutting edge design and fabrication tools. The art work is arguably the largest 3D printed art work in India which is true to “code”, “medium”, and “material”. The installation is composed of 58 printed components. The total printing time for a single tree is 928 hours. Approximately 20 3D printers were deployed to fabricate the same. This excludes the assembly and installation time.
