Course Brief

This module will provide an overview of urban sociology merging theory and practice explained with examples across urban sectors and geographies. A historical overview of urbanization in India will set the backdrop to trace it to the current urban context. An understanding of the term “urban” and its multiple interpretations and a discussion on urban planning, institutions, recent policies and urban development as discussed in the Constitution of India will empirically anchor the course. This will be be followed by understanding of concepts like informality, gentrification, and place. These will be further examined with the help of urban theories. Significant urban theories both in Northern and Southern contexts will be discussed to develop a comprehensive understanding.

Course Curriculum

This is an online course where individual learners can enjoy a learn-at-your-pace system. The entire course is divided into 5 modules. Every module is divided into multiple short lectures of 7-15 minutes. Day 3: Urbanisation

Urbanisation – Historical Overview and Contemporary trends 


Day 4:  Urban Concepts

Urban concepts and theories- globalization, informality, place making, gentrification, urbanity, urbanism, city utopias like global cities and smart cities with critiques.
